Learn from the life of one of the world's greatest bodybuilders. Four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler lives with unbridled consistency and dedication. His life is a regimented combination of eating, sleeping, and training. He lives large, works hard, and trains harder. His physique wins contests—and he's gunning for another Sandow September 28, 2013, in Las Vegas—but his mentality and determination make him a true champion. Take a cue from Jay's life to enrich your own. Building muscle takes more than physical fortitude. It takes a certain mindset and drive to create an elite body. Even if you lift big, you won't get big if you don't know how to think big. That's your first lesson from Jay Cutler. "I always say that the mentality of a bodybuilder isn't normal," Jay explains. "Something has to be triggered inside you. You always want to push yourself beyond the limits. Honestly, you have to be a little crazy. There are some people who have the potential to have the best physiques in the world, but they don't have the mental capabilities to push themselves." You can't be one of the world's best bodybuilders if you don't have the mental toughness to work at it, day in and day out. To build your body, you must master your mind and tune out distractions. Jay knows this all too well. "It isn't an easy thing being Jay Cutler," he says. "I'm recognized everywhere I go, and everybody wants a piece of my time." Jay has a business to run, travels constantly, trains often, eats more often, and tries to leave some time for fun. He lives in Vegas, which offers even more temptations, but Jay wouldn't have it any other way. "It gives me more drive being in a place that's so distracting, and I'm still so focused." Aside from being absurdly busy, Jay struggles with little things most people do with ease: "You don't understand the benefits of being a normal person until you see someone like me who can't buy clothes off the rack, can't eat normal places, can't ride in certain sized cars, can't ride in some airplane seats, can't stay in certain hotels with small beds, or fit in small showers. It's hard to shop, it's hard to go out to eat, it's hard to travel." On the plus side, it's easy for him to build more muscle than most people can fathom. They stare, but he doesn't care. "I don't try to hide it," he says. "I don't wear big, baggy clothes." Jay has spent the last 20 years turning his body into a work of art; he knows how to appreciate it. "When you're my size, you never think you're small. I like the way I look now. I'm always checking myself out, flexing, admiring the physique." Although Father Time is now perhaps his biggest bodybuilding adversary, Jay still accepts nothing but greatness from himself. "I don't think I'm 'past my prime,'" he says."I'm a four-time Mr. Olympia champ and six-time runner up. That line is in the eye of the lifter, but there's little doubt that the weight room in the rural Idaho community of Firth had slipped into the latter category a long time ago. It's nobody's fault. Like countless similar facilities nationwide, the weight room in this 230-student small-town school was created with what was available, not what was ideal. The space was a former typing lab from the days of electric typewriters. The squat rack and dip station were fabricated in shop class. The weights themselves had been covered in rust since before the current crop of students were born. And the less said about the condition of the walls, ceiling, and floor, the better. Ask student Jared Anderson about the room, though, and he'll say, "It was everything to me." He first set foot there when his brother introduced him to lifting during seventh grade. Then, he began lifting for football and baseball. He even kept lifting when, against the odds, he developed stage-three cancer as a teenager. "Kids can be cruel," he says. "I was subject to ridicule and bullying, which caused me to develop a very defensive and protective state of mind." When Jordan was in the ninth grade, his parents divorced. He blamed himself, and his weight soared. It wasn't until he became a football lineman that his 5-foot-9, 290-pound frame was put to good use. Then, tragedy struck. "When I was 14, my mom suddenly passed away," he says. "I'll never forget the moment I heard the news. I was in complete shock." The search for "Why?" provided no answers and drove Jordan further into despair. "Food became my outlet—my coping mechanism for dealing with my depression," he says. "I didn't care about my future." By the end of his senior year of high school, Jordan weighed 400 pounds. He doesn't know how heavy he became, because after graduation, he stopped tracking his weight. "Doctors told me I would die young from obesity-related complications; I told them, 'If that happens, then so be it,'" he says. It wasn't until after his accident that Jordan had a change of heart. Why Was Your Accident A Wake-Up Call? On March 30, 2008, I was in a car collision, and it took five guys to lift me up on the stretcher. The next day, I went for an MRI and barely fit inside the machine. They almost had to send me to a special version that is bigger than normal. That day, I decided that I'd had enough. I decided I had to change the way I lived and ate, and I started exercising. I decided I was worth the hard work and dedication that it would take to improve my future. No matter how hard it would become, I vowed never to give up. I realized there was no room for excuses, self-pity, or fear. The pain of what had to be done could never match the pain I felt from the way I was living. What Were The First Steps You Took To Transform Your Life? I started out walking my little Boston terrier, Blackberry. It took me an hour to walk her one mile—down and back up a hill. After that mile, everything hurt. I felt so uncomfortable. But I stuck with it, and we were eventually running 4 miles a day six days a week. When I thought about quitting back then, I knew I had to do this not only for myself, but for my dog, too! I lost 100 pounds just from walking. While on vacation in Las Vegas, I ventured into the hotel gym. I got to work, hoping that nobody would be around. Soon after, a few folks joined in. Instead of laughing at me and reacting the way I thought they would, they encouraged me. When I got home, I joined a local gym. If people thought I was out of place or had negative thoughts, that would be their problem. "I was definitely that cute baby who looked like I had rubber bands on my wrists and arms," she says. "It's just not as attractive when you're 18." When Nicole Wilkins graced the stage at the 2014 Olympia, she came in as a seasoned pro. As she stood under the hot, beaming lights—eager to make history with her fourth Figure and first back-to-back Olympia win—she heard nothing. The roar of the crowd fell silent, and the audience's cheers were put on mute. For that single moment, everything came together for the returning champ. Focus was key. "I thought, 'Walk slow, don't trip, hit your poses the way you need to hold them, make sure you're twisting enough, make sure your chest is lifted enough, make sure you're smiling,'" Nicole says. "I think you're so focused on what you're doing in that moment. Everything else is sort of silent. Even when they announce your name as the winner, it's all you hear. It's just you and the lights." Nicole Wilkins spoke with Bodybuilding.com about what it was like to compete at the 2014 Olympia, and shared her thoughts on the role figure competition has played in her life. TWO DAYS BEFORE FINALS For Figure competitors—or any Olympia competitor for that matter—the competition is about presenting a perfect package on stage, even if things behind the scenes are a little more complicated. "Winning my first Olympia was amazing, but to then lose it and have the motivation to keep going after a divorce was difficult," Nicole says. "I mean, those are extreme highs and lows, but every one of those steps and every one of those moments has led up to this." The week before the Olympia may be taxing for some but, despite the occasional bout of butterflies—to be expected when defending a title and standing in front of the world in a posing suit—Nicole says it was like the calm before the storm. "With the hard work behind me, it's just about enjoying the moment and having fun." Part of that fun happened during the first night of the O at "Meet The Olympians," where competitors met fans and signed autographs. It was a place where the size of the crowd at your booth was a sign of your popularity and recognition in the field. "I remember the first year I was there," Nicole says. "I didn't have any line at all. I thought, 'Wouldn't it be awesome to have a line of people who actually knew who I was?'" This year, she had just that. "It's exciting to know you have that big [of] an impact on people that you never even met before" she says. "I deal with women who've lost 100 pounds or guys who have lost 100 pounds or quit smoking, and they want to tell you about all the positive changes they've made in their life. That's when the reality sets in that you have a huge impact and affect people more than you realize." It's a level of notoriety Nicole still hasn't gotten used to, and something she never takes for granted. "I'm always hoping people will still want to see me," she says. "I'm hoping that people want to talk to me and come up to my booth. I don't think I'll ever get to a point where I'll expect that. To me, it's very humbling. I'm just doing what I love." "I went into this sport originally because I wanted it to help my career," she says. "As a personal trainer, I thought it would help my business. I could show people that I could get in good shape too. I still have that mindset." Nicole won't be quitting figure competition anytime soon. "When you're number one at this, you want to stay number one," she says. "When I feel like I'm not getting that excitement anymore, that's when I'll know it's time to hang up the heels. I don't think I've necessarily reached my full potential yet. I still have room for growth." Make this dish your own with chorizo, flank steak, or salmon instead. Don't love black-eyed peas? Replace with your bean of choice. Once you add the orange juice to layer flavor and cut fat, you'll smell the delight of a finished product.
